Chenine Bhathena

Chenine has recently been appointed the Creative Director for Coventry 2021, UK City Of Culture.  For the last 8 years Chenine has been a Senior Culture Manager delivering the Mayor of London’s Cultural Strategy, taking the lead on Culture and Placemaking across London.  Chenine is Programme Director for the Mayor’s £5M London Borough of Culture award, putting culture at the heart of communities, and scoping a new industrial strategy through the Thames Estuary Production Corridor.  She has been charged with initiating, shaping and leading these new signature programmes for the city, working closely across the public and private sectors.   Over the last five years she has made the case for greater investment in culture through major high street, housing and transport development schemes, leading a range of high profile arts programmes for the Mayor to reinvigorate high streets: the inaugural Lumiere London 2016, The Streets, Summer Streets and Circulate. She is currently focussing on a programme of creative initiatives to increase engagement with the iconic River Thames, including a major new lighting programme for 15 bridges Illuminated River and a new five-year Cultural Vision.  As London 2012 Creative Programmer (2009-2013), she initiated and led a high profile £8M programme of ambitious outdoor arts events across greater London as part of the London 2012 Festival, acclaimed as the most accessible festival ever produced by a local authority.  In her former role at Arts Council England (2006-2009) she was the national lead for Outdoor Arts, producing the Arts Council’s New Landscapes strategy, having worked for many years (1991-2005) with artists in a range of sites and locations as an independent creative producer.
